How to Lay Decking Tiles

    • 1). Clean the existing deck with the garden hose and the push broom. Let the deck completely dry.

    • 2). Using the notched side of the trowel, apply the isolation membrane to the deck surface. Using the notched side will ensure that the membrane has an even depth.

    • 3). Use the flat side of the trowel to knock down or flatten the ridges in the isolation membrane. Make sure you create a flat, even surface, with no bare spots.

    • 4). Allow the isolation membrane to dry according to packaging information, or overnight.

    • 5). Lay out several rows of tiles in a dry run, to determine what tile cuts need to be made. This is also a good time to try out any decorative patterns you may have in mind.

    • 6). Use the wet saw to cut the tiles needed for the first few rows so you do not to have to continuously stop your project to saw tiles.

    • 7). Apply 1/2-inch-deep thin-set mortar on top of the isolation membrane with the flat side of the trowel.

    • 8). Use long strokes to comb through the mortar with the toothed edge of the trowel. Be sure not to go deep enough to penetrate into the isolation membrane.

    • 9). Place the tiles in the mortar with a slight twisting motion. Use tile spacers between the tiles to ensure even spacing. The rubber mallet will be helpful for lightly tapping tiles into place.

    • 10

Let the mortar cure for a day or two.

    • 11

      Mix the grout.

    • 12

Work in small areas at a time, using the grout float at a 45-degree angle to drag grout into the spaces between tiles. Be sure to drag the grout into each seam from at least two different directions for each joint.

    • 13

Use the grout float at a 90-degree angle to scrape any excess grout off the tile surface. Work in the same small areas as in step 12. Repeat steps 12 and 13 until the entire deck has been grouted.

    • 14

Lay a wet towel on each section of tile and pull the towel toward you to smooth out each section.

    • 15

Use a damp sponge to wipe any remaining grout off the tiles, and polish the tiles with a dry towel.

    • 16

Caulk any expansion joints, using caulk that is the same color as your grout. Be sure to vacuum any debris out of the joints before caulking them.

    • 17

Allow all materials to dry for 24 to 48 hours before you walk or place anything on the deck.
