- 1). Mow any areas near gravel driveways or gravel edges in the yard to help expose sandy soil. Grit is found in the sandy soil and is an essential component of the dove's diet.
- 2). Create a sandy area outside by pouring sand or gravel -- purchased from a home improvement or landscape store -- if sandy soil is not naturally available in the environment.
- 3). Plant rows of sunflowers or set up an outdoor location with a variety of potted sunflowers. Keep the area around the sunflowers weeded and clear.
- 4). Provide a water source for the doves in an open area. You can use a shallow container that can withstand outdoor weather.
- 5). Sprinkle bread crumbs outdoors on a flat surface for the doves.
- 6). Plant clover or wheat in an outdoor garden; doves enjoy eating the seeds of wheat, grass and clover.
- 7). Arrange small branches on a flat area of the land for the doves to sit and rest. Dead trees also provide great perches for doves.
