Heated or Covered Amsterdam Café Terraces
Whiling away an afternoon on a café terrace is a quintessential Amsterdam experience. Almost every café has some sort of outdoor seating. But with the unpredictable weather Amsterdam is known for -- sunny and pleasant one minute, cold and windy or rainy the next -- eating and drinking alfresco can be risky. That is, if you haven't found one of these conveniently heated or covered terraces. So go ahead and watch the sidewalk passers-by because here you'll stay warm and dry.
Heated and covered terrace
I just love how typically Amsterdam this little corner café is. Located in an area that combines the charm and chaos of the city's old center, Staalmesters offers a cozy covered spot from which to watch the world go by. Sit under heated awnings on the west corner for a sunset, or the north corner for views of a canal and drawbridge. This is a perfect place for some hapjes, or little snacks, and a beer.
Heated and covered terrace
An Old South neighborhood favorite, this upscale establishment has one of my favorite terraces in Amsterdam. The combination of a south-facing orientation, the heaters hovering above, several cozy fleece blankets on offer and the excellent posh-people-watching is what makes de Joffers so popular. The food here is also delicious, although a bit pricey. Take a break here after a walk through the nearby Vondelpark.
Heated and covered terrace
I should start asking for free meals here as much as I recommend this adorable restaurant. It makes this list because of its heated and covered sidewalk seating area, where you can spend hours people-watching and sipping cappuccino.More »
Heated and covered terrace
"Two Princes" is a typical Amsterdam brown café on a canalside corner in the lively, lovable Jordaan neighborhood. Stay warm and dry under the awnings, or take advantage of the water views at tables just across the street in fair weather.
Heated and covered terrace
This eetcafé with its colorful patio lights and a view over a canal to the Rijksmuseum has a loyal local following. Stop by on a sunny-but-cool day, where you can enjoy the heated terrace and south-facing position as you nibble on simple Dutch food and draft beers. This corner between the Oud Zuid and De Pijp can get a bit noisy between all the regulars and the adjacent tram line, but somehow the vibe is enjoyable. And it's only fitting that the name means "Inside Outside."
Covered terraces
If you're passing by the square called Spui (pronounced "spow" like "cow"), you can take your pick of covered spots to enjoy a beer or coffee while watching trams, bikes and pedestrians navigate this busy central area. The semi-enclosed terrace at Café Beiaard on the corner offers a view of the beautiful De Krijtberg church across the canal. Cafés Luxembourg, Hoppe and De Zwart -- located next to each other along Spuistraat -- have enclosures, awnings and umbrellas to keep patrons dry during showers.
