Jamshedpur - The Steel City

Jamshedpur is a modern, industrial city in the Eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. It is also referred to as the Steel City of India because of the presence of Tata Steel around which the city has grown. The City is bound by Dalma Mountains and the Rivers Subarnarekha and Karkai.

Jamshedpur is named after Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the House of Tatas and Tata Sons. Jamshedji had a vision for Steel in India and built what has become the fifth largest Steel Company in the world. Tata Group today has many industries based out of Jamshedpur. Jamshedpur is located in Southern Jharkhand, a region rich in iron ore and coal and was specifically selected after a three-year search by Tatas over central India to set up Indias first Steel Plant. Today Tata Steel and Tata Motors have a major stake in Jamshedpurs progress, so much so that the city is also referred to as Tata Nagar, the name given to its railway station. Other than Tata Industries, many small scale and medium scale industries have developed in the vicinity, many as ancilliary units to the numerous Tata Enterprises.

The City today has one of the highest per capita income averages in the city. The city does not have Municipal Corporation (the only one in India of the size). The role of city administration has been totally assumed by Tata Steel and that is the way the people have wanted it. The citizens of Jamshedpur have resisted two attempts by the Government of Jharkhand to end the control of Tatas over the administration of the city. The infrastructure facilities of the city are good and its management has earned the city the Global Compact city award in 2004, bringing it into a select company of only ten other cities across the world. It beat Pune and Bangalore enroute to the award. The education and transport infrastructure of the city is robust. Despite having been in Bihar and recently in Jharkhand, carved out of Bihar, Jamshedpur was never affected by the lawlessness generally associated with the State.

The city is cosmopolitan and diverse, having people from all states of India, especially from Bengal. The city has a population of over 1.1 Million. The City is well connected by Rail and Road. It lies on Highway 33. The nearest airport however is Birsa Munda Airport at Ranchi, 106 kilometers but with limited flights and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata (Calcutta), 226 Kilometers away.

Some interesting places to visit include the beautiful Jubilee Hills, Tata Steel Zoological Park, Jayanti Sarovar, Rivers Meet, Sir Dorabji Tata Park, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, and Dimna Lake. Jamshedpur has a stadium, Keenan Stadium in which International Cricket Matches are played.

Hotels in Jamshedpur include Fortune Hotel Center Point (4Star), Mansarovar Hotel and Hotel Sidhartha (3Star), and Budget Hotels - Boulevard Hotel, Hotel Rajhans, Skylark, Greenstar, Chanakya, Southpark, Prince and the Regent. For some good food, one may drop in to the Host or Kwality restaurant.
