- 1). Plant the impatiens in a shaded area that is protected from the harsh afternoon sun. The soil should be well-drained and at a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Test the soil with a test kit before planting and add lime to bring up the pH if necessary.
- 2). Place a 2- to 3- inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant. This will retain moisture and keep down the weeds that may compete for nutrients around the plants.
- 3). Water the flowers, keeping them consistently moist until they take root and throughout the growing season. Do not over-water or soak the soil, or the flowers will essentially drown.
- 4). Fertilize the impatiens monthly in the growing season with a complete water-soluble fertilizer. Follow the directions on the package for application and safety instructions.
