• 1). Select a straight growing sapling with a diameter of two inches or so to use as a spear. Choose a length of at least six feet for the spear.

    • 2). Trim knots or limbs from the knife and smooth the sapling as much as possible.

    • 3). Sharpen one end of the sapling spear with the knife. Shape the end into a sharp point that is capable of penetrating the hide of an animal.

    • 4). Build a fire and allow it to burn so that hot coals are formed.

    • 5). Prop the spear so the sharpened tip is suspended above the hot coals to one side of the fire. Keep the spear tip out of direct flame. Allow the green wood at the tip to heat and harden. Monitor the spear closely and rotate the tip so it heats evenly and cures.
