How Can I Teach My Child Cursive?
- 1). Buy white paper, big markers and thick pencils from an office supplies store. Thick writing utensils are easier for children to grip and use. Let your child use regular pencils and pens once she is more familiar with cursive. Consider also buying a cursive workbook.
- 2). Print out worksheets, the entire cursive alphabet and primary-lined writing paper from the Internet. Make 50 to 100 copies of the primary-lined writing paper.
- 3). Teach your child three letters at a time. Help your child complete each worksheet that you printed. Make your child erase and rewrite each letter that he did not form correctly. Praise him whenever he forms a letter exceptionally well.
- 4). Let your child use the primary-lined writing paper for extra practice. Make your child write each letter in cursive repetitively on the writing paper. Help her write her name and common words in cursive using the paper.
- 5). Assist your child when he makes the transition from writing on primary-lined writing paper to writing on white paper. At first, your child's cursive writing may be crooked and the size might be inconsistent. If your child practices consistently, his cursive writing will improve.
