How to Prevent Mold on a Wall
- 1). Clean regularly, paying particular attention to areas of the house where mold tends to be a problem, such as the laundry room, kitchen and bathroom. Wipe down walls in vulnerable areas with distilled white vinegar at least once a month. The acid in the vinegar will discourage mold growth.
- 2). Replace or repair any items that permit water to enter the home, such as broken pipes, damaged roofs or poorly fitted windows. Additionally, remove humidifiers from the house as their sole function is to increase the amount of moisture in the air.
- 3). Install exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom. When engaging in activities that produce moisture, such as cooking foods in boiling water, be sure the fan is on. Alternatively, open the windows to encourage the flow of air throughout the room, preventing condensation from forming on the walls.
- 4). Reduce the amount of moisture in the air whenever possible. Keep pans covered when cooking. Do not dry clothing by draping damp garments over radiators or vents. Make sure appliances that generate moist, warm air, such as stoves or clothes dryers, are vented to the outdoors.
- 5). Wipe walls and ceilings with a dry towel when water condensation does occur- such as after a shower or when running the dishwasher.
- 6). Cover walls with ceramic tiles or semi-gloss paint as these surfaces naturally discourage the growth of mold.
