• Fluid retention, or retaining water in your system, can cause swollen puffy eyes. Fluid retention can be caused by hormonal changes such as a woman's period. Drinking too much alcohol or having too much sodium in your diet can cause fluid retention.
  
  

Illnesses

• Illnesses that may be the cause of swollen puffy eyes are thyroid disorders, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, lupus, mononucleosis, rosacea, sinusitis or a stye.
