What Are the Causes of Puffy or Swollen Eyes?

    Heredity

    • Having the tendency to develop swollen puffy bags under the eyes can be caused by heredity. There are dermatological and surgical procedures to diminish this problem.

    Stress

    • Stress is often a cause of swollen puffy eyes. This is particularly a problem if you have been crying. When we are stressed or upset more blood flows to the eye area causing puffiness.

    Allergies

    • Allergies are a common cause of swelling and puffiness around the eyes Allergies to plants, animals, dust or mold can cause the skin around the eyes to swell.

    Fluid Retention

    • Fluid retention, or retaining water in your system, can cause swollen puffy eyes. Fluid retention can be caused by hormonal changes such as a woman's period. Drinking too much alcohol or having too much sodium in your diet can cause fluid retention.

    Illnesses

    • Illnesses that may be the cause of swollen puffy eyes are thyroid disorders, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, lupus, mononucleosis, rosacea, sinusitis or a stye. If you think you have one of these illnesses or you are not able to determine the cause of your swollen puffy eyes, you should go to your doctor.
