Ponytail Hair Bow Instructions

    • 1). Select the hair elastic for the bow. If the ribbons will be attached to the elastic, choose one that matches in color. If the elastic will be used simply to hold the hair and the bow tied after, choose one that matches your hair color so it's unobtrusive.

    • 2). Choose the ribbons for the bow. If tying a simple bow, select a single ribbon. For a fuller bow select several sections of ribbon in multiple colors. Cut the ribbon or ribbons to the desired length. You can tie a short full bow, or leave long tails for a more dramatic look.

    • 3). Tie a simple bow by placing the elastic over the hair then wrapping several times for a plain ponytail. Lift the ribbon so that the center of the piece rests at the bottom of the hair elastic. Bring both ends up and over, crossing them and tying a simple crossover knot. Make a loop as if tying a shoelace knot, then wrap the other end around and pull it through the hole making a second loop. Draw it tight. Adjust the two loops so that they are even.

    • 4). Make a fuller bow by laying out several sections of ribbon and cut them to alternating lengths. Place them on a flat surface, and draw a threaded needle through them to pull them together. Use the thread to wrap the hair elastic and tie it off to attach the ribbon to the elastic. Now make two loops as the bow top, and draw the threaded needle through the center to secure the two loops. Tie off the thread in a small knot to secure it. Use the elastic with the attached bow to make the ponytail.

    • 5). Wrap several ribbons around the hair elastic for a full fringe-type bow. Use a slip knot to attach the ribbons to the elastic, either attaching several in one spot or all the way around the elastic. Slip the elastic over the hair and tighten. This is not a true bow, but it is a similar style that creates the ribbon-tail effect.
