DOT Regulations for Fire Extinguishers

- DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations are required to be completed and marked on every fire extinguisher with more than 1660 kPa of compressed gas at more than 70 degrees F. All other extinguishers must be marked with DOT compliance and a "tested on" date.
- All contents of the fire extinguisher must be non-flammable, non-poisonous and noncorrosive.
- Fire extinguishers must be shipped inside of an inner packaging.
- The volume of the cylinder cannot exceed 1,100 cubic inches and the liquid portion of the gas cannot fill the container. Those exceeding 55 cubic inches cannot contain any liquid form of gas. The cylinder pressure must not exceed 70 degrees F when shipped. Prior to shipment, the cylinder's pressure must be tested above 70 degrees F three times and marked as such. For subsequent shipping, these tests must be completed again.
