How to Cook a Beer-Steamed Bratwurst
- 1). Set up your steamer according to the manufacturer's instructions and add enough beer to top it up to the recommended filling line. If you are using a pot on the stove, insert the steamer basket and then fill the pot with beer until it begins to seep in through the bottom of the steamer.
- 2). Add any extra flavorings you wish to use and turn on the steamer. If you're using a pot on the stove, turn the burner to medium-high.
- 3). Loosely fill the steamer basket with bratwurst. They should be jumbled, not stacked neatly, in order to let the steam circulate freely. Do not pierce the sausage casings.
- 4). Cover tightly and wait for steam to begin billowing from under the lid. Begin timing the bratwurst, which need to steam for 10 minutes. If you're steaming on the stove, reduce the heat slightly so that the steam makes a plume but does not appear to be escaping under pressure.
- 5). Remove the lid after 10 minutes and allow the steam to dissipate. Remove the steamer basket of sausages. They may now be grilled, pan fried or cooked by any other method.
