How Do I Fill Out a Civil Service Job Application?
- 1). Research your state or federal agency website to determine the preferred method of receipt for civil service applications. If you are looking for a career with the Federal Government, you will visit the U.S. Department of State website to search for career opportunities and review the application process.
- 2). Complete any required registration process to initiate the application process. At the federal level, you will be required to register online with the Federal Government job website, usajobs.gov. State Agencies like the Louisiana Department of State Civil Service will also require you to register with their agency job website in order to complete your application.
- 3). Open the civil service job application once you have identified your desired position. The application may be provided as an Adobe Acrobat document (.pdf), or as a web page form. Be sure you have identified the agency's preferred receipt method. If the application is a webpage form, you will simply fill in the required field and submit it. If the application is a .pdf file, you may need to save the completed form and submit it by email as an attachment.
- 4). Complete the identification fields in the application. Provide, where indicated, your name and personal identification information including contact and work preference details. If the application is a .pdf file, you may type your information in the designated fields, or print the file and fill in content with a blue or black ink pen.
- 5). Refer to your most current resume to complete the education and previous work history portions of your application. Be sure to correctly indicate time frames for all school and work experience. Do not omit or skip any required fields in this section, as your application may be rejected.
- 6). Complete all skills and certification fields. These fields will assist Human Resources in matching you with your desired position and any other civil service opportunities available within your desired area(s). Be sure to include any special skills you've acquired in previous jobs including specific software expertise, fluency in languages or administration experience.
- 7). Review your application and confirm that all your information is correct. Confirm all dates and ensure your work history is complete including start and stop dates, manager name detail and salary ranges. If the application requires you list an associated job vacancy requisition number of job title, be sure you have also included that detail for the job you desire. Once you have completed and checked all fields, you will submit the form directly from the website page if using a webform. If you completed a .pdf document, you will either submit the application via email to a contact indicated on the form, or mail a printed copy to the designated office for consideration.
