When you graduate from nursing school, most hospitals do not wish to hire a new nurse directly into the Emergency Room. The ER requires a special set of skills. If you are anxious to get into an ER position right away, the best bet lies with finding a preceptor program that will see you through for the first few months, making you more appealing for full time work. Most such programs are associated with different schools, so you should inquire while still attending your program. - UCSF, University of California San Francisco, offers a program in a Level II Emergency Department. In order to expedite wait times in the ER, this hospital uses nurse practitioners and physician assistants for non-urgent illnesses and interventions. This helps the new nurse in practicing proper triage technique, in other words deciding which patients are priorities. This program runs 12 weeks and will teach you the ins and outs of staffing an ER. The program runs 12-hour shifts, working the nurses two to three days per week.
