How to Treat Cuts to Reduce Scarring

    • 1). Clean the cut by holding injured body part underneath cool water. You may also gently pour cool water over the injury. This removes any debris that may be in the cut.

    • 2). Use a soft rag and an antibacterial soap to gently wash the skin around the wound. This will help prevent infection at the wound site.

    • 3). Place a clean piece of gauze over the wound to help stop the bleeding. Hold the gauze in place until the bleeding subsides. Then change the gauze and use a bandage wrapping to hold the gauze in place.

    • 4). Change the bandage once a day. Use an antibiotic cream on the skin around the cut one to two times a day. This will help prevent infection, and help speed the healing process.

    • 5). After the cut has almost closed, you may choose to use a skin adhesive glue to close up the wound. Your doctor may need to do this procedure. They do sell skin adhesive over the counter, but if you have never done it before, a doctor's visit may be the best choice.

    • 6). Once the wound has closed and the skin adhesive has fallen off, use a small amount of Mederma, or other scar preventive cream, on your skin. These products can be effective at preventing scars; by using one of these creams and the skin adhesive, you may have no scar whatsoever.
