Honda Activa - The All-Rounder Scooter
There was a time not long ago when scooters meant heavy, unmanageable vehicles, which were rather difficult to handle. However, with the evolution of technology and time, these machines were replaced by lightweight vehicles, which are rather easy to ride and handle. Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India, a subsidiary of Honda Motors is one of the leading manufacturers of these gearless, lightweight scooters in India. Though the company forayed into the segment much after the likes of Kinetic, Bajaj and TVs, it took no time to establish itself as the segment leader. It is all because of a single model named Honda Activa.
Honda Activa is the flagship model for Honda in the gearless scooter segment. It is also the most sold gearless scooter in India. As it is a unisex scooter, it found acceptability from both men and women alike. Honda Activa was initially launched in the year 2000. It carried a 102 cc engine with a power of 7bhp. It came with options like kick /self-start, puncture resistant tire and so on. The original version of the Activa was a best-seller in spite of its rather bland look and hefty make. People continued to put their confidence on this bike, despite having to wait for more than six months to get the bike.
After almost a decade long life, Honda decided to infuse a fresh breath into the Activa. Accordingly, a newer version of Activa was launched in 2009. This was slightly more powerful than the original Activa as it featured a brand new 109 cc engine capable of generating 8bhp of power. It came with some additional features like combi-brake and key shutter. The fuel efficiency, Honda claimed, improved by 15%.
Then came the third avatar of the Activa - Activa-i. It was launched in 2013 as a sleeker and stylish variant of Activa. This new bike was essentially the same, except the change in body style. It can be stated it was like the old Activa in a new body, as the engine and other features were identical to the earlier version.
As the competition increased, Honda did a rethinking of their strategies and deiced to give the Activa an upgrade. Accordingly, in April 2014, Honda Activa was launched with a 125cc engine and it was called Activa 125. The major change was in the engine department as well as the color combinations on the offer. As such, the bike was offered in four colors - Black, White, Blue Metallic and Silver Metallic. Presently, both Activa-i and Activa 125 are available in India.
With a decent mileage of more than 50 kmpl, the Activa has positioned itself as an executive scooter, which is ideal for daily commuting within the city.
