U.S. Customs in Malaysia
- Malaysia enforces a strict illegal drug policy. The trafficking of illegal drugs is punishable by death. In addition, you cannot bring in any goods from South Africa and Israel. The religious beliefs of the country have left it at odds with the Jewish nation of Israel, hence the ban of goods from there. No articles of currency, imprints, stamps or otherwise can be brought into the country. You can bring circulating money into Malaysia in amounts up to 1,000 MYR or 10,000 USD without declaring the items.
- You can bring a number of things into Malaysia with no import fees. These items, considered for personal use, have limits on the totals in an attempt to avoid illegal retail of such products. They include 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 1 liter of wine or spirits and 100 matches. Gifts and souvenirs with a value up to MYR 200 are allowed. Only three pieces of new apparel and one pair of new shoes may come in with a single person. Only single items of portable electrical or battery-operated devices can come in. Cosmetics, perfumes and soaps worth up to MYR 200 are allowed.
- All free import items must be brought into the country by people meeting certain criteria. The articles must come in by a visitor on his person or in his baggage. Non-alien residents who bring in the goods must be staying more than 120 hours. Nationals and residents of Malaysia must have been out of the country for more than 120 hours to bring these items back with them. This stops people from departing the country just to acquire goods and bring the goods back.
- Malaysia maintains a low occurrence of rabies. In order to keep this disease at bay, pets brought into the country must be quarantined for up to six months. An exception is made for animals coming from countries that have not had any cases of rabies in the prior six months, which the United States has never qualified for due to the expansive nature of the country. Space must be reserved in advance at the Kuala Lumpur Quarantine Station to accommodate any incoming pets.
