Shrubs for Houston
- Houston, Texas, is probably more well-known for its sweltering temperatures, everything-big lifestyle and the Houston Texans NFL team than its gardening opportunities. However, contrary to the oppressive heat this area of the country receives each summer, there are several shrubs that thrive in this environment and can be incorporated into Houston gardens.
- A favorite shrub among hummingbirds, the pink surprise bush grows to heights of 4 feet and can grow equally as wide. It grows fairly quickly and does best in full sun to light shade, particularly when planted in well-drained soil. Blooms on this shrub are either pink or light purple, and can be found from spring to late fall. The best time to plant this shrub is during the spring and summer months. This shrub is suitable for container planting as well as for accent purposes. The shrub does better when pruned.
- This shrub produces a dramatic hibiscus bloom, presenting in a range of colors that includes white, pink, light purple, dark purple and shades of blue. It grows to heights of 12 feet and a width of 6 feet and performs best in full to partial sun. Soil must be organic for optimal results, with good drainage. The best time to plant this shrub in your home garden is in fall or spring, and you can expect blooms from June through September. The Althea is a hardy shrub, more than capable of weathering Houston's sometimes rough winter months. This shrub can be used as a border shrub or as an accent plant.
- Best planted in fall or early spring, the Japanese pieris is a medium-sized shrub that sprouts fragrant white flowers during springtime bloom, which occurs between April and May. Leaves turn a deep, dark green during summer months and bronze when new leaves sprout. Growing to a height of 4 feet and equal that in width, the Japanese pieris requires well-drained soil and performs best in sun to shade lighting conditions. It can be used within a mixed border, around the perimeter of a home's exterior or as an accent shrub.
