How to Install Spacers on Porcelain Tiles

    • 1). Lay your tile according to directions. As you lay each tile, place a spacer up against each of the tile's edges and corners, holding it in place by the next tile in the sequence. Most tile spacers are T-shaped pieces of plastic and can be either used flat (for a narrower grout line) or sideways, with the crossbar extending over the surface of the tiles, for a wider line. They are also available in varying widths, to control the size of your grout line.

    • 2). Allow the tile cement to dry with the spacers in place.

    • 3). Remove the spacers from between the tiles. Tap the top of the spacer gently and pry it out with a narrow screwdriver or twist the top of the spacer in order to remove it, if you set the tiles tight against the spacers.

    • 4). Grout your tiles according to the directions on your grout package. If you used the same style and size spacers, the grout lines will be an even width.
