- A business development manager's job is to grow a business. You do this through increased sales, mergers, promotional activities, acquiring a complementary business and growing market share. While part of the job is to increase sales, a business development manager focuses more on long-term strategies to grow the overall business.
- An aviation business development manager might work for an airline, an airplane manufacturer, a freight hauler or even an aviation magazine. Large flight schools employ business development managers. Aviation is a specialized industry; most business development jobs require aviation experience.
- Aviation business development management positions normally require a four-year business degree. Many candidates continue their education with an MBA. Having an MBA increases your starting salary.
- There are common tasks that a business development manager performs: identifying business opportunities; identifying and assessing competitors; opening new markets; and developing additional revenue streams.
- The salary range varies greatly, depending on the company and industry. As of August 2010, salaries range from $35,000 for small businesses to well over $100,000 for someone working for a large airline or airplane manufacturer, according to Glass Door. In many cases, bonuses make up a significant portion of the pay.
