How to Paint Ceramic Floors

    • 1). Scrub the floor with an abrasive cleaner to remove wax, grime or floor cleaner residue. Use a stiff-bristle scrub brush, rinse well with clean water and mop dry.

    • 2). Break the surface gloss by sanding the floor with an orbital sander fitted with 220-grit emery paper. Remove sanding residue with a vacuum cleaner.

    • 3). Clean the grout by pouring a mixture of 2 to 4 tbsp. of oxygen bleach powder for every 2 cups of water onto the grout lines. Allow 5 to 10 minutes for the bleach to work before wiping the floor down with clean water. Damp mop and allow time to dry.

    • 4). Paint the floor with two coats of high-quality epoxy primer. Use a 1/8-inch low nap roller. Cut paint into corners with a good-quality paintbrush. Allow adequate drying time between coats.

    • 5). Go over the floor with the orbital sander fitted with 220-grit emery paper to remove air-born dust particles and imperfections once primer hardens. Wipe the floor down with a microfiber tack cloth to remove sanding residue.

    • 6). Apply two to three coats of good-quality epoxy paint as described in Step 4, allowing adequate drying time between coats. Allow 24 hours for the paint to cure before walking on the floor or moving furniture into the room.
