Monumental Weekend Overtakes Downtown Indianapolis

It's called Monumental Weekend for a reason. This weekend is chock-full of exciting events in the downtown area. Enjoy motorcycle racing, the popular Gen Con gaming convention, concerts, baseball games and a huge theatre festival and more! Check out the list of events below to make sure you don't miss and thing. And don't forget that the Indiana State Fair is also wrapping up!

Gen Con


An estimated 40,000 people will descend upon the Indiana Convention Center this weekend for the largest gaming convention of its kind. Gen Con will feature costume contests (you'll see costumed people all over the downtown area), a life size 10,000 square foot True Dungeon, tournaments, guest appearances, exhibits, games, workshops, auctions and much more.

Motorcycles on Meridian


Motorcyclists will gather downtown to celebrate the Red Bull Indianapolis GP at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway This Friday and Saturday. Motorcyclists and pedestrians alike are encouraged to walk the streets to catch a glimpse of chrome and leather at this fun event. Show off your own bike or just take in the sights and sounds. The entrance for the 2013 Motorcycles on Meridian is through Monument Circle; cyclists should enter the route from Monument Circle and continue onto Meridian.

When: August 16 - 7 p.m. to midnight; August 17 - 4 p.m. - midnight

Red Bull Indianapolis GP


If you enjoy watching speed bike racing, you're in luck this weekend. Around 100,000 visitors are expected to gather as many of the top MotoGP racers compete in the Red Bull Indianapolis GP at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event will include three races at different competition levels: Moto3, Moto2 and the premier MotoGP field. The three races take place Sunday, August 18, starting with Moto3 at 11 a.m. The MotoGP race will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday. Practices begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16 and qualifications will start up at 12:35 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. Tickets for practice and qualifying days are $20, and race day tickets range from $50 to $130.

IndyFringe Theatre Festival


The IndyFringe Theatre Festival is an 11-day festival chock-full of zanny theatrical fun on Mass Ave. The annual event and fundraiser for the arts spans across eight venues and features over 64 performing groups and 384 performances! Enjoy dance, drama, comedy, music, magic and cabaret during the festival. Ticket prices for IndyFringe shows are $10 per person, per show. A one-time $5 badge is required and is good for the entire festival.

The Indianapolis Indians will battle it out against the Columbus Clippers when they host a four-day home stand starting Wednesday, August 13 – Friday, August 16. The Friday night game will be followed by fireworks.

Animals and All That Jazz


The Indianapolis Zoo will host the last 'Animals and All That Jazz' Thursday, August 15. Zoo visitors can relax to the sounds of live jazz music while strolling through zoo exhibits. Children can take advantage of the warm weather in the zoo Splash Park, located near the music while parents enjoy the lineup. Animals and All That Jazz is included with regular zoo admission.
