Lydia Prim - Party Groove Blue Ball 4
About.com Rating
I first heard Lydia Prim when I was on a spring break excursion to DC about five years ago. The entire club was abuzz about the new hot, female DJ bursting onto the circuit scene. As I walked past the dance floor I got an earful of a trainwreck as she tried to layer Can?t Fight the Moonlight with some tribal funk beats. Not the best sound in the world and I easily dismissed her from my mind?s DJ catalog.
Here we are though with her latest cd release on the great Centaur records and I must say, this mix is a keeper.
The linear notes of the CD contain a short message from Miss Prim on her mindset as she got the CD made. One comment that stuck out was when she said that she tried to steer clear of the obvious choices (i.e. big room diva anthems) when programming her tracklist. While I love my divas, I don?t miss them here. What Prim creates is a much more funky, less in-your-face attitude that never feels fluffy. Queens who can?t move without a wailing woman singing about love need not fear though. The soulful styling of David Morales' recent hit How Would You Feel will be your crowd pleaser.
The central theme of this year?s Blue Ball CD seems to be focused on the music and that idea is followed throughout the entire eighty minutes. While many DJs do this in live sets, rarely do we see a single thought carried through a whole compilation. Labels usually want to cram in as many hits as possible to sell as many copies as possible and many times these sort of albums seem like a hodgepodge of random tracks simply beatmatched.
This isn?t the case here. Tracks like I Need Music and even the older Stand Up resonate throughout the mix.
Every DJ has their slip-ups (this one being no exception) and perhaps I shouldn?t have dismissed Lydia Prim so soon. Turns out she knows her music quite well and this is a testament to that. All in all, it?s a wonderful collection of funky house music that is sure to get you up out of your seat and moving in no time.
