Roadside assistance in the middle of the night

Looking at my experience with roadside assistance you might learn some things about what could happen in a situation where your car breaks down. You might think that you know what you will do in a situation like this; however, until you are faced with the situation itself, you do not know how you are going to react and what exactly you are going to do. My story happened in the middle of the night, and being a woman stranded in the middle of nowhere with smoke coming out of the engine can be intimidating to begin with.

While driving, I noticed that smoke was coming out from under the hood of the car and I had to pull over. I got out of the car and opened the hood and even more smoke started coming out. I was scared to get back in the car, in case the problem itself would cause a fire or an explosion. In any case, I had to get the number of a roadside assistance company to come and help me.

I called the roadside assistance company and they started asking me questions. First, they asked for my name and the registration number of the car. Next, they asked me what the problem was and I tried explaining as accurate as I could. They asked me about the color of the smoke; however, it was dark and I had no idea about that. As a precaution, the person on the other side of the telephone told me to stay away from the car. I was not too thrilled about this aspect because it was very dark and you could not see more than one or two meters away. Last, but certainly not least, they asked for my location. I had no idea where I was so I told them the last location I remembered and asked them to follow the main road until they could see a car with smoke coming out of it.

Unfortunately, if you are too far away from a city, it takes a while for the roadside assistance to come and get you. By the time they reached me, there was no more smoke coming out of the car. They checked everything and the explanation I got was a bit fuzzy. I must admit that I simply wanted the night to be over and I did not pay attention to anything that they said. All I understood was that something overheated, they added water or oil, I am not sure, and now the car was good to go.

Finally, I arrived at home, and I got to the conclusion that without the reassurance and fast response from the roadside assistance services, I had no idea what I would have done stranded in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. I am now grateful for these services; however, I would advise you to know your rough location at all times and to keep calm in such situations.
