Overview of Keaton Beach Florida

Keaton Beach is located on the Florida gulf coast in the "big bend" area of the panhandle.
It's a destination for boaters mostly, but anyone who loves the ocean will enjoy this town.
Most activities are found offshore here, and practically everyone has a boat.
The marina is located in the main part of town, and they will put your boat in for a small fee.
They also have hotel rooms they rent out to guests on request.
About the Town: Keaton Beach does not have lots of people coming through it; it's a quiet town, and everyone basically knows everyone.
Many people own condos and houses around town.
It's a great place to get away from daily life if you don't like large crowds.
Sometimes the town is basically vacant, and it reminds me of a ghost town in the winter.
Scallops For most of the year, Keaton Beach is not very crowded, but things begin to heat up in the spring for scallop season which is a really big deal here.
People travel from all over to collect scalllops in the grass flats off Keaton Beach.
All you really need is a mask, snorkel, and a pair of fins to catch them.
If you've ever collected scallops before, you know that they can swim, but they cannot swim fast.
You must grab them if they try to get away from you.
Where to catch them You will find scallops basically anywhere in the grassy areas right off shore in shallow water.
Scallops like grass, and they like to hide in it.
Anywhere there is grass, you will likely find scallops.
This grass is tall thin seagrass.
It can be several feet tall or less than a foot tall.
The scallops will blend in with the color of the grass to avoid predators like us.
The water depth at Keaton Beach can get very shallow very quickly off shore.
If you're in a boat, you may find yourself stranded even if you previously thought the water was plenty deep.
You'll need to keep a watch on your depth gauge, and it's especially important if you have a heavy boat that you can't dislodge from the bank easily should it become stuck.
A large boat can become hopelessly stuck, and you will just have to sit there possibly for several hours before the tide rises and you are able to get back to the marina.
You can easily get several buckets of scallops from the grasses at Keaton Beach.
