Solar Hot Water Kit DIY

    • 1). Clean clear plastic soda bottles or jars prior to use. Remove all labels. If you need to treat the water to make it safe for consumption, place the water inside the clear plastic soda bottles or glass jars and tighten the lids. Leave the filled water containers lying on their sides in constant sun exposure for six straight hours. If the weather is spotty or there are clouds in the sky more than half the time, leave the bottle in the sun the next day for another six hours.

    • 2). Clean at least five gallon milk jugs, two-liter plastic soda bottles, jars or combination of the three. Paint flat black paint with a paintbrush around all sides and portions of the containers, stopping about 2 inches from the lids. Use only paint that reads "non-toxic when dry" on the label. Leave a narrow u- or v-shaped spot roughly 2 to 3 inches in length on one side of the container near the top of the black paint unpainted. This will allow you to see from the side of the container if the water is boiling or not.

    • 3). Fill the containers with water, stopping roughly 1 inch from the lids. Tighten the lids.

    • 4). Place the containers in the sun for three to six hours. Each container will now contain hot if not boiling water depending on the time of day or region of the country.
