How to Clean Supplies for Birds

    • 1). Remove your bird to a safe location in another room, or take the items to be cleaned outside to protect the bird from exposure to cleaning fumes.

    • 2). Fill one bucket with hot water and a few drops of dish detergent, and the second bucket with one gallon hot water and 1/2 cup household bleach.

    • 3). Gently scrub perches, toys, dishes, and other bird supplies with hot soapy water to remove droppings and food debris and rinse in clean water. Organic material such as dirt and droppings will prevent the disinfectant from working properly, so scrub and rinse the supplies very well.

    • 4). Dip your bird supplies and toys into the mixture of water and bleach and allow them to soak for five to 10 minutes to sanitize them. For larger items, the bleach solution may be poured into a clean, unused spray bottle and sprayed until damp.

    • 5). Rinse nonporous items such as stainless steel bowls thoroughly to remove all traces of bleach. Perches and toys should be soaked in clean, hot water for another 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing to remove bleach.

    • 6). Air-dry all disinfected items in a sunny location outdoors to allow any lingering bleach to dissipate.
