Singer"s Tip for Sinus and Nasal Stuffiness
With the changing seasons, you may be experiencing an increased amount of sinus and nasal stuffiness and congestion.
I personally have struggled with this issue for many years.
Although I don't get as many sinus infections as in the past, I still get a stuffy nose in the morning when I wake up at times.
If you're a singer, you know that dealing with this can really hinder your abilities, and the sounds you make with your beautiful voice! Sometimes the nasal blockage is mild, but at other times each morning the stuffiness will get worse and worse for me.
When it gets to the completely-stuffed, plus runny stage, it's time to take action! Dealing with this can be very exhausting and cause a large amount of irritation throughout the day.
There are so many different factors to dealing with sinus infections, that I could go for days and days talking about what you can do to prevent and treat them.
I could also talk your ear off about what causes them! However, I just wanted to share one tip for today: The Neti Pot or Sinus Rinse + Nasal Spray combination.
It took me a long time to really get the gist of the sinus rinse thing because I just didn't like the idea of the discomfort I may feel from pushing liquid through my nasal passages.
But when I finally caved and gave it a try, I've found that nasal rinsing has really helped me tremendously! What I do is, I do the sinus rinse according to the package with room temperature water (you have to use bottled or boiled water).
It comes with a solution you mix in with the water; you just pour the solution and water in your bottle (or pot) and shake! I use NeilMed.
I believe you can find it in any drugstore/pharmacy.
There are a lot of different options for nasal rinses, but I like NeilMed because they provide an easy to use squeeze bottle.
The other popular option is the Neti Pot, which looks like a tea kettle.
Though I have not tried this option.
What the rinse does: it irrigates the sinuses and nasal passages by gently cleansing them with the water and solution.
After using the rinse, I follow up with an over the counter nasal spray to shrink the nasal membranes.
Swollen nasal membranes are what cause your nose to be stuffy.
It prevents air from getting through the nostrils.
Thus why your nose feels "stuffed up.
" Sometimes the stuffy feeling can also be caused by nasal polyps, but that's another type of challenge altogether.
After completing these two steps, I feel so much better for the rest of the day! I do have to be careful with the nasal spray though, because sometimes it'll send me into a sneezing frenzy if I use too much.
So singers, try this tip! Singing through stuffiness is no fun at all.
Keep those nasal passages free and clear! Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor.
Please seek the advice of a medical professional prior to use of medications and/or medical procedures.
I simply wanted to share something that has helped me.
