How to Polish a Drill Bit
- 1). Shake the drill over a sheet of newspaper to loosen contaminants that have stuck to the drill. Wrap a hand towel around the drill bit. Slowly press in on the drill's trigger to rotate the drill bit. Release the trigger after five seconds have passed. Remove the towel.
- 2). Remove the drill bit from the power drill; typically this will involve turning a key tool that is included with the drill counterclockwise to release the drill bit.
- 3). Hold the drill bit by the blunt end in one hand. Hold the toothbrush in the other hand. Brush the drill bit, starting at the tip and running down the length with the toothbrush. Rotate the drill bit 1/4 turn and repeat the procedure with the toothbrush. Repeat the procedure two more times.
- 4). Apply light machine oil to a soft cloth. Wrap the moistened end of the cloth around the drill bit. Twirl the drill bit between your hands. Remove the cloth. Return the drill bit to the drill by reversing the procedure used to remove it earlier.
- 5). Place a wood block on a table. Dribble a few drops of light machine oil on the wood near its center. Slowly press in on the drill's trigger. Drill through the oily part of the wood about halfway. Pull the drill out of the wood while continuing to keep your finger on the trigger. Release the trigger once the drill bit has exited the wood.
- 6). Remove the drill bit from the drill. Wipe the drill bit with the oil-moistened cloth and place it in a protective case.
