How to Change the Colors of a Cartoon in Photoshop
- 1). Import the cartoon image file that would like to edit into Photoshop by choosing "File," then "Open."
- 2). Select a color from the color swatch that corresponds with the hue you would like to use in place of the original hue in your cartoon.
- 3). Select the Color Replacement Tool, located in the same tab containing the Brush Tool. Select a brush shape and size under the Brush tab. Select "Color" for the blending mode.
- 4). Under the Sampling menu, choose between three types of sampling: Continuous, Once, and Background Swatch. The Continuous Mode replaces every color that you drag your mouse across in the image with the new color. The Once Mode samples and replaces only the first color you click on. For example, if you select red, it will only replace the red areas of the image with the new color that you selected in Step 2. Background Swatch Mode replaces the parts of your image that match the color currently in the background swatch. For example, if your background swatch is set to white, then the Color Replacement Tool will change the white areas of your image to the new color as you drag your mouse across them.

Select a limit under the Limit options, which includes Discontinuous, Continuous, and Find Edges. Adobe recommends generally setting your limit to "Discontinuous." Choose a tolerance level, which determines the range of color tones that the Color Replacement Tool accepts in its selection. For example, if you are trying to change the color of this athlete's uniform from green to orange, you should set a moderate tolerance of about 30 percent. Otherwise, the shadowing in his shirt and shorts will not be included in the selection. The highlights of his shirts will become orange while the shadowing will be green. - 6). Click on the color in your image that you would like to replace. Drag the Color Replacement Tool across the cartoon. The areas of the image containing the color you clicked on will be replaced with the hue you selected in Step 2.
