How to Repaint Heavily Textured Walls
- 1). Inspect the wall surface for any cracks or holes. Even small nail holes may ruin the look of your finished paint job. Fill these areas with smooth spackle and let it dry overnight.
- 2). Tape along the ceiling, floorboards and around outlets, windows and doors with painter's tape. Use overlapping pieces of painter's tape to cover chair rails and other accent moldings you do not plan to paint. Cover the floor and other surfaces you wish to protect from paint splatter with plastic tarps.
- 3). Prime the walls with oil-based primer. Roll on the primer with a ¾-inch shearling paint roller. Use overlapping "V" patterns, just as you would to paint a nontextured wall.
- 4). Cut in the edges of the wall using a paintbrush with full, long natural bristles. These bristles allow better coverage of textured surfaces than nylon ones. Use a pouncing motion in very deeply textured areas to work the primer down into them.
- 5). Allow the primer to dry for several hours. Paint the textured walls with a semigloss mixture of your chosen color, using a clean shearling roller and a clean paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry overnight and remove the tape and tarps.
