Unusual Places to Visit in Florida

    Coral Castle Museum

    • Between 1923 and 1951, Ed Leedskalnin carved more than 1,000 tons of coral rock to build the pieces of Coral Castle in Miami. Leedskalnin took his construction secrets to his grave so no one is entirely sure, to this day, how certain aspects were built. Now available for tours, the museum features a 9-ton rock gate that opens with a finger's touch and rock rocking chairs. There's also a sculpture garden with various creations.

    Gatorland

    • Gatorland in Orlando has 110 acres of wildlife and entertainment. The park is home to thousands of alligators and crocodiles, including rare white alligators. There's an aviary, petting zoo, an observation tower over a breeding marsh and live reptilian shows. Kids can play in the animal-free Gator Gully Splash Park. Tour the facility via the Gatorland Express train.

    Jules' Underwater Lodge

    • The Jules' Underwater Lodge in Key Largo is a hotel located 21 feet underwater. Guests must scuba dive down through mangrove habitats and aquatic life to reach the entrance under the lodge. Inside await beds, hot showers, a kitchen with a microwave and refrigerator, a television with a DVD player and 42-inch round windows through which guests can watch the passing sea life. Guest packages range from a multiple-night stay with dinners and breakfasts served by a chef to a three-hour visit to the facility.

    Weeki Wachee Springs

    • Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is best known for its live mermaid shows. Costumed synchronized swimmers perform routines for guests. Located an hour north of Tampa, the park also offers live animal shows and river boat cruises. The Buccaneer Bay natural spring water park has flume rides, a lazy river and an aquatic play area for children.
