The Pancreas

• The pancreas is an organ that releases enzymes and hormones. If it inflames, this will cause enzyme deficiency and severe pain for the cat.
  
  

Symptoms

• Symptoms of this disease are poor appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and a high temperature, according to "A-Z of Cat Health and First Aid." Your cat may act generally subdued, but become guarded or bite if you try to touch the abdomen area.
  
  

Home Treatment

• Give the cat small volumes of water to protect it from becoming dehydrated. Keep the litter tray nearby and allow the cat to sit down without disturbance.
  
  

Hospitalization

• The cat will likely need to be hospitalized for several days so it can be given food and fluids intravenously. Veterinarians can also prescribe antibiotics, pain killers and sometimes even blood transfusions.
  
  

Diet

• Once the cat has been treated, it can be taken home, but it will need to maintain a mild diet. Appropriate diet foods include pasta, rice and other carbohydrates.
