Home Remedy to Remove Grease and Oil Spots from Cement
- Sawdust or clay kitty litter can help to draw the stain out of concrete pores and absorb it. Cover the areas with one of these absorbent materials and leave it for at least 48 hours to allow it time to work. If the stain is out in the open in an unprotected area and the weather isn't cooperating, cover it with plastic and tape down the edges to keep it dry. Use a sturdy weatherproof tape such as duct tape.
- After the stain has had ample time to lift, uncover the area. Sweep up the absorbing agent from the concrete and dump the litter or sawdust into a plastic bag. If the stain was from oil or another hazardous substance, set aside the contaminated material for proper disposal.
- If the absorbing agent didn't remove all of the stain, here's where the scrubbing comes in. Drizzle dish detergent over the stain, preferably a grease-cutting formula. Boil water on the stove and dump it over the stain to soak it thoroughly. Scrub the area with a coarse bristle brush or push broom to help lift the stain. Continue adding more soap and water as needed.
- When you have removed as much of the stain as will come up, rinse the area with your hose and allow it to air dry. Look over the area once it is dry to see whether the stain is gone. If a stain is still noticeable on the concrete, repeat the entire process.
