Anti-Static Products for Fine Hair
- Winter hats cause static in the hair. Special hair products can alleviate this problem.smiling brunette in a winter hat image by Andrew Howard from Fotolia.com
When hair picks up positive charges from the air, the result is frizzy, unmanageable, flyaway strands that repel from the rest of the hair and stand on end. Dry winter air is the most common culprit, but clothing fresh from the dryer can also transfer a negative charge into the hair. Keeping the hair moisturized and using specially formulated anti-static products is the best defense against bad hair days caused by flyaways. - Does your shampoo contain anti-static ingredients?shampoos and shaving foam lined up image by Georgios Alexandris from Fotolia.com
Some shampoos are formulated with anti-static ingredients and offer additional protection against flyaway hair. While they may not completely eliminate static, these products can significantly reduce it. A moisturizing shampoo is another good option for reducing the amount of static, as dry hair is more susceptible to this problem. - Ionic styling tools blow away static.dryers image by timur1970 from Fotolia.com
A variety of hair styling tools now offer ionic technology. These newer blow dryers and straightening irons are referred to as ionic because they transfer negative ions onto the hair. Ionic styling tools are often made with powdered tourmaline, as this precious crystal is capable of producing a large amount of negative ions. The negative ions left on the hair cancel out the positive ions that cause flyaway strands and give the hair a smoother, shinier appearance. - Leave-in conditioners coat the hair strands, making it more difficult for static to build up.
For best results, apply a leave-in conditioner after shampooing and conditioning as you normally would. Look for silicone based conditioners, which are particularly effective at leaving a protective coating on the hair and taming flyaway strands. Frizz serums work in much the same manner. - Not all hairbrushes are created equal.hair brush (series3) image by Jake Hellbach from Fotolia.com
Plastic bristle brushes can actually increase the static in hair. Boar bristle brushes have long been appreciated for their superior ability to evenly distribute natural oils throughout the hair. A good quality natural bristle brush will generally be more expensive than a synthetic one, but can be considered a good investment. Not only will these costlier brushes cause less damage to hair, but static will be significantly reduced as well.
