Pirate Hat Crafts
- Tear a sheet of newspaper in half down the middle. Fold the sheet of paper in half width-wise. Fold the two top corners into the middle of the page to create a triangle shape. Leave a small rectangle strip at the bottom of the paper. Fold one side of the strip up over the folded pieces holding the corners in place. Flip the paper over and flip up the strip on the other side as well. Pull apart the open end for a pirate hat. Decorate with a skull and crossbones.
- Cut a 2-inch thick strip from black card stock and wrap it around the child's head. Staple or tape the strip into a crown. Fold another piece of card stock in half. Along the folded edge, draw the outline of half a pirate hat. Cut out the shape and unfold the hat. Cut out a skull and crossbones from white felt. Glue the felt to the front of the hat. Tape or staple the black hat to the front of the crown to complete the hat.
- Draw the outline for a pirate hat onto a piece of black craft foam. Cut out the hat. Cut out a skull and crossbones from white felt and glue it to the front of the pirate hat. Punch two holes into either side of the hat with a hole punch. Embellish the hat as desired with sequins or feathers. Tie a piece of elastic thread to either hole. Slip the elastic over the child's head to complete the pirate hat.
- Print the pirate hat template from leehansen.com The file opens as a printable PDF and comes with a pattern for an eye patch as well. Cut out the pattern and strips with scissors. Cut holes about 2 inches from either side of the hat large enough for the strips to slide into. Place the strips through the slits and tape into place. Wrap the strips around the child's head and tape together at the back of the head.
