How to Get Help for Borderline Personality Disorder
- 1). Admit to the problem. A person with BPD must admit they need help for their issues. Once that occurs, then the healing process can begin. Admitting that you have a problem is perhaps the hardest step to take.
- 2). Talk to someone. Talking to others is perhaps the best way for the person with BPD to get the help they need. It allows for them to release their emotions and put them into better perspective.
- 3). Seek therapy. If the BPD person is not already in therapy, starting therapy is a wise idea. Check with your insurance company to see what therapists are in your area that accept your kind of insurance. The therapist may also want to place the person on medication to stabilize the person.
Being in therapy may provide a great relief to the BPD person, as it can give him or her the outlet they need to talk about their anger, depression or whatever is causing them to feel out of control. - 4). Seek additional help if needed. Other outlets for help include hospitalizations and community support groups. The BPD's therapist or the local emergency room can determine if hospitalization is needed. Community support groups are also helpful, as they can provide the BPD person with the knowledge that they are not alone in their disorder.
- 5). Read up. If the BPD person is serious about getting better, that person will seek out their own ways to get better. Check out books from the local library, read Internet articles or buy books.
