The Industrial Relations Act of Trinidad

    Function

    • The Act's primary function is to establish procedures for reconciling disputes between management and labor. Collective agreements must be between three and five years, strikes are allowed by law if a dispute can not be resolved (except in the case of essential services, as deemed by the President) and workers may create and join unions.

    Features

    • The Act creates an Industrial Court which oversees hearings between industrial labor and management. The president appoints judges on the Industrial Court. The Act also creates Registration Recognition and Certification Board (with a chairman and eight other members) that industrial organizations must register with.

    History

    • The Act originally passed in 1972. Follow-up legislation includes the Delegation of Function Order and Industrial Relations Regulations. As of 2010, the last year that the Act was amended was 1994.
