Superchumbo - Wowie Zowie (Take 2)

About.com Rating

An acid trip. That's how I would describe this album by Tom Stephan of Superchumbo. In the last few years, Stephan has emerged as one of the standouts in the underground house sound. And it's his sound that is so memorable. Clanging drums backed with filtered, acid-like basslines, plus the signature odd, cunty vocal. He epitomizes the twisted-house vibe.

For his first artist album, he employed the vocal stylings of some familiar names: Samantha Fox and Alan T being the most recognizable.

But, for me, it was the collaborations with Sylvia Mason-James and Victoria Wilson-James that really worked. You may remember those two from their very successful Twisted Records tracks Irresistible and The Revolution respectably. Both are included in this package in case you forgot ? shame on you if you did! There's also a new track with Sylvia titled Some that opens the disc. It's quite reminiscent of the duo's previous track but not enough to annoy jaded listeners like myself.

The boys get their due time on the album as well with very New Order-sounding tracks like Tranquilizer ft. Neil Tennant. Who could also forget last year's hot, hot, HOT "This Beat Is" that tore up dancefloors everywhere? Most of the buzz for the new CD comes, though, from Bring It with Gay Joy and Alan T. While I can personally "get" the song, I'm not so sure many dancefloors will.

All in all, a great trip down that twisted route courtesy of a great producer. This beat is ALL over my body!
