Celebrate Pride Week in Boston
2015 marks the 45th anniversary of Pride Week, and with the theme "Wicked Proud", Boston celebrates the LGBT community. This year's Pride Week events will be held from June 5 through 14. (And yes, technically this is longer than a week, but why curtail the fun?)
As always, the biggest draw is the annual parade, held this year on Saturday, June 13. However, be sure to make room in your calendar for the full roster of events in the days leading up to the parade and after: Equally worth attending are the Pride's festival, lectures, youth/family events, and block parties.
Here are the main events happening in and around Boston for Pride 2015.
- Pride Day at Faneuil Hall: Held on Saturday, June 6 (rain or shine), Faneuil Hall's Pride Day features Zumba classes, karaoke, dance performances, and live music.
- Pride Night at Fenway Park: Cheer on the Red Sox as they take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, June 12. A percentage of proceeds from the first-come, first-serve tickets will go to support Boston Pride activities. (And in keeping with the celebratory mood, hopefully the Red Sox will have improved their record by then!)
- Boston Gay Men's Chorus Smile concert: The ever-popular chorus will perform one show only during Pride Week, on June 14 at Symphony Hall. Featuring special guest Laura Benanti, the shows will include selections from Broadway hit musicals such as Cabaret, The Sound of Music, and Sunday in the Park with George, among other favorites.
- Pride Parade: The 45th annual Boston Pride Parade kicks off at noon on June 13, rain or shine, at the intersection of Boylston and Clarendon streets in the Back Bay, continues through Beacon Hill, and wraps up at City Hall Plaza. With large crowds attending each year, taking the T is recommended, as parking is typically limited.
- Boston Pride Festival: The festival follows the parade, starting at the parade's ending point of City Hall Plaza. This year's will be held on June 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Pride Stage features acts such as Estelle, Mary Lambert, and Kevin Yee, among others. There’s also a beer and wine lounge, family activities, and plenty of food venders and exhibitors to check out.
- ESME Block Party: Sponsored by LesbianNightlife.com, this block party is on Saturday, June 13, from 2 to 7 p.m. in the Alley at 1 Boylston Place.
- Block Parties: Pride Week wraps up with a series of block parties around the city. On Sunday, June 14, head to Perkins Street in Jamaica Plain between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for the annual JP block party, or visit St. James Avenue in the Back Bay between noon and 8 p.m. for that neighborhood's annual celebration. Suggested donations are $10-$15 for JP and $15 for Back Bay.
