  Operations analysts, also called operations research analysts, research, analyze and resolve day-to-day problems of a business. The function of an operations analyst is to analyze and interpret information that assists management in forming policies and making other decisions. Problem-solving and communication skills, as well as above-average computer skills and mathematical skills, are needed to be an effective operations analyst.
  
  

Research

• Research is a key responsibility for operations analysts. They thoroughly gather data and research existing business strategies to come up with recommendations for improvement. To help in gathering information, analysts interview managers and other key players within a company. This includes asking plenty of questions to determine what needs to be changed. Job duties of operations research analysts include preparing user manuals and instructions for operations departments.
  
  

Analysis

• Operations analysts examine information by applying mathematical skills, such as calculus and statistics. Analysts measure performance and are involved in setting prices and allocating resources. Other techniques used for operations analysis include computer modeling, linear programming and simulation. Analysts talk to other professionals to determine the best strategy. For example, they consult an accountant or auditor for financial expertise, or they consult with an IT professional for software recommendations.
  
  

Preparing Reports

• Once data are gathered and analyzed, the information has to be put into a format to present to management. Report preparation is a common job duty for operations research analysts. Information is compiled in outline form or in a more detailed report. Other ways of presenting data include graphs, flowcharts and mathematical reconciliation. Operations analysts sometimes prepare routine monthly or weekly reports, or they prepare unscheduled reports at the request of management.
  
  

Problem Solving

• Operations analysts strive to solve problems and suggest new strategies for decision making to improve the efficiency of a company. A high degree of accuracy is required. Analysts work in teams to approach complex problems so that they can brainstorm possible solutions. Pros and cons of possible solutions are presented to managers, who use the suggestions to make final decisions. Operations analysts assist in implementing software improvements. Successful operations analysts have a strong attention to detail and the ability to recognize what is working and what is missing or inefficient.
