Free Events in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a city best explored at leisure. The city is huge, with several districts containing night life, sightseeing and festivals. With so many free events in and around the city, Copenhagen won’t cost a fortune. Stroget is Copenhagen’s most famous pedestrian shopping street. Rådhuspladsen is the cheapest place to shop but even if shopping isn’t your thing, there are lots of things to see and do here. This is also where you can find information on local events and festivities that takes place every year.
For those traveling on a tight budget, why not make use of the Citybike facilities, absolutely free. In Copenhagen, bicycles are a very popular form of transportation. The city lets you use bicycles at no cost, except for a single coin deposit that will be refunded upon your return. Free events in Copenhagen include:

1. The Changing of the Guard

Regardless of wind, snow or rain, the Changing of the Guard takes place every day at the Amalienborg Palace. Most visitors prefer to view the change taking place at noon. On the Queen’s birthday on April 16, after the Changing of the Guard at noon, Queen Margrethe II and her closest family appear on the balcony to be greeted by loud cheers from the crowd.More »

2. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival

Every summer from early July, the annual Jazz Festival is a 10 day event that attracts over a quarter million people, regardless of weather conditions. The city will be full of jazz music, so there is no set stage to visit. Performers can be found from parks to street cafes. 3. Statens Kunstmuseum Art Gallery & Museum


Situated in central Copenhagen, in the beautiful park of Østre Anlæg, you can view royal collections of paintings and sculptures throughout the year. Also on display are royal collections of prints and castings. The museum hosts over 9,000 paintings, 300,000 drawings and over 2,000 casts. It is an art lover’s dream, and entrance is free to the public. (Copenhagen's National Gallery, the Open Air Museum and the Resistance Museum also don’t charge an entrance fee!)

4. Stroget Santa Parade in July

People from literally all over the world don their best Santa suits to take part in in the Santa Parade along the Strøget main shopping street, going from the Copenhagen Town Hall Square to Amagertorv. There are live bands and the jolly Santas hand out candy to the public before celebrating Christmas-in-July at Amagertorv!

5. Lighting of the Christmas Tree

The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Copenhagen is a big event and attended by thousands of people. The enormous tree is lit up early in December, hailing the start of the festive season.

6. The Copenhagen Carnival in May

Copenhagen Carnival is an annual free carnival event taking place in Fælledparken and on the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark, for three days. The Carnival takes place at the end of May. This free event comes with a Latin feel, so you can expect a lot of music tents, Samba street lessons and street performers, along with colorful parades!

7. Open Air Films by TV2 Zulu


Every year in the middle of summer, TV2 Zulu hosts a series of open air film screenings in Copenhagen. The screenings can be seen in parks and recreational areas all over the city.

8. Free Sports & Excercise Activities

For any visitor who enjoys being active, there is a list of things to do and events available to help you burn that extra energy. Except for the free bike service in the city, you can easily join a jogging program. On Friday nights, you can give in-line skating a go. (www.fns.cph.dk for more information).
