Take On The Milford Track This Summer

Milford Sound has a reputation as the eighth wonder of the world due to it's incredible natural beauty which, due to its World Heritage status and being situated in a National Park, remains in an untouched and pristine condition much as it was over a hundred and twenty years ago when it was first discovered in the late 1800's.
It's located on the Fiordland National Park in the south eastern section of the South Island of New Zealand.
One of the best ways to experience this incredible beauty is by traversing the Milford Track, which as a 'moderate' difficulty rating, meaning it is suitable to novices with a reasonable to high level of fitness, through to experienced hikers allowing the track to be enjoyed by a large range of people.
A round trip of the track takes 4 - 5 days, and there are plenty of huts along the route to stay in during your traverse.
However, it is highly recommended to book these well in advance, particularly during the peak summer season.
You'll also need to make sure you are fully equipped for the trip including having additional provisions should there adverse weather which may see you required to spend additional time on the track.
Making sure you have plenty of light layered clothing including thermals in case of cool weather and also wet weather gear as there is frequent rain in the area.
In fact, it's this inclement weather that contributes to the majesty of the area with the rain creating rivulets that stream off the cliffs into incredible waterfalls turning the area into a series of postcard worthy images, so don't forget to take your camera.
The track takes you through beautiful native bushland where you'll see a huge range of flora and fauna including native trees such as rimu, silver and red beech trees, kahikatea and totara, black pine, and white pine along with silver ferns, rata, pepperwood and an array of tussock grass complemented by tree daisies and buttercups.
Dotted amongst these you'll also see kea, bellbird, robin, and weka.
From the luxurious forests to the alpine meadows, from the sheer cliff faces to the pristine 'Sounds', the Milford Track offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience some of the world's most incredible and breath taking scenery, some of which looks like a scene out of a movie, whilst also participating in a pastime that offers you a the reward and satisfaction of completing the trek through this area of New Zealand.
