Wet or Dry Eye Disease

    Wet Vs. Dry

    • The dry form of the condition is caused by waste accumulation and inefficient flow of blood and nutrients to the macula. The wet form results when blood vessels leak fluid into the macula.

    Risk Factors

    • Risk factors include being over 60, female, family history, heart disease, high cholesterol, light eyes and insufficient antioxidant intake.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for the dry form includes supplementation: 500 mg of Vitamin C, 400 IU of Vitamin E, 15 mg of beta carotene, 80 mg of zinc and 2 mg of copper. Treatment for the wet form includes certain medications and procedures to interfere with new blood vessel growth.

    Dietary Suggestions

    • Eat antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Reduce your intake of saturated fat found in animal products.

    Self-Care Suggestions

    • Do not smoke. Wear sunglasses that offer protection against UVA and UVB rays.
