Understanding the Desktop Stock Ticker Terms
Trading stock online can be a daunting task at first.
Terms like YTD, PE-ratio and NYSE may sound completely foreign, but it does not really have to be that difficult.
Below you will find an explanation of the most common terms when using a Free Desktop Stock Ticker.
YTD % CHG - Year-to-Date Percentage Change.
The number indicates how much the stock price has changed within the calendar year.
The number is adjusted for dividends over ten percent and for stockspilts over ten percent.
The higher positive number the better.
52-week HI & LO - is two numbers indicating the highest and the lowest stock price traded during the previous 52 week period.
Note that the number does not include the previous days tradings and that is might be adjusted if the stock has paid out large dividends or payouts.
Stock(SYM) - This is the name of the stock.
Very often abbreviated, and the stock symbols are listed.
The symbol is bold face in WSJ, but most newspapers either do not include the symbol or do not put it in bold face.
DIV - Dividend/Distribution rates.
This number is the annual dividend based on the last 'regular' disbursement.
Please pay attention to footnotes on this number.
Yield % -yield is a percentage that measures the cash returns to the owners of a stock.
A high yield allows the stock owner to recoup the investment sooner, and thereby reducing the risk.
But in the same time, a higher yield might be the result of a falling market value for the stock as a result of higher risk.
PE - Price Earning (also called "earnings multiple").
PE is a measure of the price paid for a stock relative to the annual income earned by the firm per share.
A higher P/E ratio means that investors are paying more for each unit of income.
VOL 100s -Sales volume.
The number is always show with the last two zeros missing, so if the sales volume for a given stock is 210,500 the VOL 100s would be 2105.
CLOSE - CLOSE is the final traded price of the stock that day.
Note that this does not indicate that is the price the stock will open with the following day.
NET CHANGE -The net change is calculated from the previous day's close, so the number compares what the stock closed at yesterday to what it closed at today.
