Preparation of a Cigar Humidor
- 1). Calibrate the hygrometer. The hygrometer is a tool used to measure the humidity inside the humidor. Take a large spoon and fill it with salt. Moisten the salt with drops of water so that it is damp.
- 2). Place the spoon of damp salt and the hygrometer in a sealed tight plastic box. Wait for eight hours for the plastic container to reach a humidity of 75 percent. The hygrometer should be close to 75 percent, but occasionally will be a few percent off.
- 3). Adjust the hygrometer with a screwdriver to read 75 percent. Use a small flat head screwdriver on the back of the hygrometer to adjust the needle. The hygrometer is now calibrated.
- 4). Fill the humidifier. Place the sponge humidifier on a plate. Dampen the humidifier with the propylene glycol solution or distilled water. Let it sit for one hour to allow the moisture to absorb.
- 5). Jiggle the humidifier after it has sat for an hour. Make sure all excess liquid has been removed.
- 6). Dry the humidifier thoroughly and put it inside the humidor.
- 7). Moisten a damp cloth with distilled water and wipe the inside of the humidor. This will allow the walls to absorb moisture.
- 8). Boil a cup of water and place it inside the humidor. Close the humidor and leave the cup of boiled water inside for approximately 12 hours. This will allow the walls of the humidor to absorb moisture and retain humidity.
