What Does Galatians 5:13-26 Means?

Galatians 5:16-26 teaches us to abide in the Spirit by walking in God's commandments instead of doing things according to the desires of the flesh. Each of us has a free will to do what we want. God does not force us to follow his commandments. It is up to you to follow God or follow your fleshly desire. The Holy Spirit will agree with God's words in the bible. The children of God who walk by the Spirit will do what God's commandments say (Romans 8:12-17).

When you walk by the flesh, you do what you feel and think of doing. An example of the lust of the flesh is drink beer until you get drunk (Ephesians 5:18). It contradicts with the way of the Spirit. You can only either choose to walk by the Spirit and obey God's commandment or walk by your flesh and disobey God's commandment (Romans 8:5). The lust of the flesh is worldliness (1 John 2:16).

Those who do things according to the desire of the flesh will not gain eternal life and inherit the kingdom of God. Only those who faithfully follow God's commandments without compromising in any way can enter into the kingdom of God. This is because only those who have consecrated their lives for God can enter into heaven. You must put away your old self and live a new life in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 4:24). Anyone who is born again in Christ must show a change into a new person in their lifestyle (1 Peter 4:6). If you want your soul to be saved, you must get rid of everything that is bad in your emotions, thoughts, behaviors and character (Colossians 3:5).

We are to love one another by sharing with others (Galatians 6:2). We are to encourage and stir up one another to good works (Hebrews 10:24; 1 Thessalonians 5:11). We are not to be stingy and selfish with those who are needy (Philippians 2:3). If you love God, you will display love in your lifestyle and look after other people's needs (Romans 12:10). A person who live his live by the Spirit will always serve others humbly out of love from the heart (Hebrews 13:17). Instead of letting others serve you and help you, you should try to serve and help others as often as possible (Ephesians 5:21; Ephesians 4:32). Whatever you do must be out of love and faith in God.

Additionally, you must study and meditate on God's words every day. To meditate on God's words means to keep God's commandments in your heart and put them in priority in everything that you do. You can take part in a bible study group or read the bible with a spiritually mature fellow Christian. You also should set apart some time to pray and worship at your home every day.

If you fully submit to the Holy Spirit, he can help you to develop the 9 fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). It may take some time to develop the 9 virtues as God do work in you. You must be willing to let God change you in order for him to do work.
