How Do You Get a Window Back Up With a Bad Power Window Motor?

    Window Partially Down

    • 1). Open the door with a window stuck partially down.

    • 2). Grip the window on each side with your hands, around the door.

    • 3). Lift up on the window until you have it completely closed.

    • 4). Apply duct tape across the top of the window to hold it in place until you can replace the power window motor.

    Window Fully Down

    • 1). Open the door with a window partially down.

    • 2). Open the hood of the vehicle, and put on your safety glasses. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and push it aside so it will not accidentally make contact with the negative battery terminal while you work.

    • 3). Remove the bolts or screws along the armrest on the inside door panel. Note that some vehicles' bolts or screws sit beneath round plastic covers. You can pry the covers off with a flat-blade screwdriver.

    • 4). Remove the power window control switch from the door panel; you must usually pry it away from the door panel. Disconnect the control switch cable.

    • 5). Remove any screws along the edge of the door panel with screwdrivers, then pry the door panel away from the fasteners holding it to the door. Use a door trim and panel removal tool to prevent damage to the plastic fasteners; simply insert the tool between the car door and door panel, and lift away.

    • 6). Grasp the edges of the door panel, and lift up to remove it from the door. Disconnect any stray electrical connectors behind the door panel.

    • 7). Remove the plastic protective lining behind the door panel by peeling it away.

    • 8). Push up on the bottom of the window until you can grasp the top (at the top of the door) with your hands. Grasp the top of the window firmly, and raise it until fully closed. Check whether the window stays closed or wants to fall back down. If it stays closed, leave the window closed until you can repair the power window motor.

    • 9). Apply duct tape across the top of the window to hold it in place, if it wants to fall back down, until you can replace the power window motor.

    • 10

Replace the door panel, following the disassembly instructions in reverse.
