Methods to Unclog Sink Drains

    Plunging

    • While plungers are most often associated with clogged toilets, these suction devices can also be used in any sink or drain. However it is vital to note that if you have already poured drain cleaner in the sink with the clog that you do not plunge the sink. Serious and long-lasting injury can occur from the chemicals splashing up at you. A plunger should be centered over the sink drain and pushed up and down until the clog moves free. Typically, the suction will draw the clog back up into the sink where it can be disposed of properly.

    Homemade Drain Cleaner

    • If you prefer not to use chemicals to clear your drains, a homemade remedy can be used and often with very good results. For this drain cleaner you will need regular baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Sprinkle the baking soda down the drain and then follow with the hydrogen peroxide. This creates a chemical reaction that should break apart the clog. The drain should then be flushed with hot water until the clog is completely gone.

    Commercial Drain Cleaner

    • Commercial drain cleaner may need to be used if the clog is severe. These cleaners work by breaking apart the cause of the clog and flushing it away. Be advised that the chemicals in drain cleaner are extremely hazardous. It bears repeating that a sink with drain cleaner in it should never be plunged. In addition, the sink should not be used until the cleaner has broken apart the clog and the drain has been flushed with hot water for several minutes.

    Snaking

    • Severe clogs that do not respond to any other methods may need to be removed through a process called "snaking." Drain snakes can be purchased at any hardware store. A drain snake is a long, flexible tube with a pointed end that is used to locate and then break apart the clog. It will typically have a handle that can be turned to help dislodge the clog. This is the same tool used by professional plumbers to get rid of clogs.
