How to Compare Digital Camera Products
- The range for a telephoto zoom lens can depend on the kind of subject and location photographed. If the photographer needs a safe distance from subjects such as ferocious wildlife or rugged terrain, a zoom lens with a range from 70mm up to 200mm or 300mm works well as a travel lens. A longer focal length gives a greater illusion of compression and shallower depth of field.
- The telephoto zoom lens should complement lenses already owned. For example, an owner of a 24 to 70mm standard zoom lens probably does not need a 24 to 105mm lens because much of the zoom range would be redundant. A 70 to 200mm lens gives a new and extended range.
- A telephoto zoom lens becomes even more versatile when coupled with a teleconverter or extender. This extension placed between the lens and camera body extends the focal length of the lens. For example, an Olympus 1.4x teleconverter can increase an Olympus 50 to 200mm lens to almost 300mm.
- Although the telephoto lens magnifies distant objects, this lens can also capture macros subjects. The minimum focus distance will impact how close a subject can be to the camera.
